Tick Tock, Tick Tock

Something is going on. I wish I had an idea what or why.

Is anyone experiencing an increase in traffic in their mailbox? Is everyone you follow showing up in your inbox INCLUDING all the followers they have when they comment?

I’t been an eventful afternoon but I don’t have time for all this extra READING, which I can’t help doing because these other comments are in my Inbox after all.

Does anyone know how to get a complaint out to the right party at WordPress so this stops?

Another blogger just put out a lament also:

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

    • Lucky you. I bet I’ve had at least 300 non-direct e-mails today. Drat. So time-consuming especially since I’m so curious and NEED to read all the ones in my inbox that have nothing to do with me. Tess

  3. Just uncheck the box that says “notify me …” that should stop it.

    • Have you noticed that that box is not AVAILable now? Also some of the comments on some blogger’s pages cover up the LIKE box too (there seems to be an overlap here—a couple of days now but I thought it was just one or two—not so)—sp whacky. Hope we hear news soon. How’s your inbox? Mine a headache ALL DAY TOday. Tess (until this clears up)

  6. are you sure you are not here with me? i say this because my email box is flooded. i took brother out and when i got home i have almost 700 emails. i don’t want to ignore anyone, but i can’t respond to each one. if i don’t respond, they will not respond to me either. i just don’t know how to handle all of this in a polite way

  7. 700 emails? Are you kidding me? I think you have been spammed, blogger friend! There is definitely something wrong! …

  8. After I posted the same question on my blog, here’s what I’ve learned:

WordPress is mucking around making changes. In do so, they have automatically checked the little box on the comment page that says “please send me an email update every time someone comments on this blog post”.

If you leave a comment, and don’t realize the box is already checked, then you will automatically receive an email every time someone comments on that blog post. Apparently the trick is to remember to uncheck the box every time you leave a comment (or until they put it back the way it used to be, which was to leave the box unchecked all the time, and give you the choice of checking it).

There is also a way to go into your settings and “quit receiving updates” on each individual blog post for which you’re receiving multiple email updates every time someone comments, but my own personal experience in doing this is that it’s labor intensive, and about half the time I get it wrong and accidentally end up “unfollowing” someone’s blog that I want to follow. I’m just going to wait it out. Eventually the comments will slow down on most of the blog posts. Unless we get lucky enough to comment on someone’s post and they have like a gazillion followers that like to leave comments.

If you want to try the “change my settings” route, here’s a HOW TO:
    Go to your Dashboard.
Just underneath the word “Dashboard” there is a list of menu items

Click on the one that says “Blogs I Follow”
When you do that, a new page opens up

At the top of page (under the blue house) you’ll see four categories:
    Sites, Comments, Pending, Settings

    Click on “Comments”
This will open a new page
Here, you will see a list of blog sites (left) and their blog posts (middle)

(these are all the ones you’re getting email notifications from)
(there should be one for every blog post you’re receiving emails updates on)

    Here, you have two choices:
    (1) you can delete them individually, or
    (2) you can delete them all at one time in one big bunch

    To delete them individually:
use your mouse to hover over an individual blog name
you should see the word “delete” show up in red
if you click on the red word delete, your screen will refresh, and *presto*
you’ve just deleted one blog comment notification

To delete them all at one time:
    *caution* *caution* *caution* *caution*
before you do this, make sure you’re on the right page
you can tell by looking at the top of your screen
the word “comments” should be bolded in black under the blue house

if so, then to delete all of them at one time:
click on all the boxes on the page
this will put a green check in every box
about halfway down the page, under the blue box, click on blue arrow
(the blue arrow is located directly to the right of the words Bulk Actions)
after you click on the arrow, click on the word “Unfollow”
Then click on the gray button that says “Apply”
your screen should refresh after a few moments, and *presto*
you have now quit following the comments on each blog post

*note – you may have to repeat this process if you are following pages and pages and pages of blog posts … hopefully not … depends on how many

There are variations on how you can do this, but for me, those are the steps that work the best. Complicated, pain in the rear, and like I said, about half the time I get it wrong, so generally speaking, I try not to mess with them.

    hope that helps

what a pain, right? thank goodness there are plenty of people more computer literate than me that generally help me figure this stuff out.

    • Thank you. Many, many thanks, in fact. A couple of days ago, I actually MADE time to catch up on delinquent award responses I’d had to catch up on since January 2012. I am OVER THE MOON when someone nominates me but habe been having a stinke of a time trying to catchup trying to connect everyone and perform all the rules. Sorry, I haven’t been able to do that since September last and it doesn’t look too encouraging before summer’s end. 13. There is another quicker fix. If you forget to untick the box, make another comment and untick. It will override the first ticked box. That is LOADS easier.

Consider yourself lucky. I have been to about six blogs where no one can comment, click, like or anything else.

    • Hiya, Red. I just noticed today when I finally got e-mails after almost none for two days that one MUST comment now just to unclick the darn box. The box doesn’t show unless you click inside the comment box and it will revert back to clicked if you don’t leave a comment. Are we going backwards or what? Seems to me, we’re being FORCED to respond of pay the consequences. In a way, this is almost funny. Tess

      • These seems to be one reverbing around the blogosphere. I think with a sufficient number of complaints, WP may cave on this one. Not sure which plugin they used on your, but check your discussion settings. You may be able to change the default to unchecked. I know the one I have I set it to unchecked.

        Worth a look 😉

  14. Yes! I was wondering what was going on. I actually shut off my email notifications earlier today, because it was just too much…figured I’ll go to the ‘reader’ and read other blogs from there in my time, instead of trying to deal with an inbox of hundreds of messages. Glad it wasn’t just me…but hope they get the problem sorted soon.

    Like

    • You mean the READER at the pull down menu where your name is? I tried that but none of the tabs activate except for the Status one.

      Like

      • I usually access the reader from my ‘stats’ page. There are tabs above the graph with your views, and I click on the reader there and it takes me to the blogs I follow. I can from there, choose to view according to topics or whatever, but the first thing that’s listed for me is the ones I follow.

  24. I’m whispering as I say this, Tess – I haven’t noticed anything untoward where my inbox is concerned. I think WP are making more changes though, for yesterday, the orange notification counter at the top of the screen that goes up to 9 when something happens (comment / like / follow etc) stopped showing numbers, and flashed a selection of speech bubbles, squares and stars. Shortly afterwards, it went back to numbers again…

  28. WordPress most certainly has had poltergeists over the past several days. CRAZY things happening like one of MY comments in reply to a comment on MY blog was tagged as spam! Now why would I spam myself! I’m glad you posted about this issue. The WordPress Forum is lit up!

I still have to click the button in ‘subscriptions’ this morning before thing got back to normal. When I juiced up my PC this morning, I had 300 excess comments after cleaning out as many as I could last night before falling into bed—exhasted. Glad everythings OK. Does that mean you didn’t have to do anything yourself to stop the problem? I’d like to know. This could be interesting. . . Tess

I did click for no followups when I received a LIKE e-mail from someone and it had a manage your e-mail or something. That took me to all the blogs I am following and there was a clickable box at the upper left-hand corner. Seems to have done the trick but surprisingly, very few e-mails today. That’s OK. I can wait and see. Thanks for helping. I appreciate your time during the fiasco last night on WP. Tess

Now I’m feeling my way around in the dark (I’m not that techie) but then WordPress does not EXPLAIN all the widgets one by one and I don’t want to screw things up for me yet again. If you go to the bottom of your Dashboard page to WordPress Tutorials. There are lots of bloggers complaining. Seems they thing this was a BUG. Why isn’w WordPress sending out a newsletter? About SOMEthing: bug or not; update or not; what then? http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/stop-email-notifications-for-comments-on-other-peoples-blogs?replies=73 Anyway, my page is starting to look a little different.
