(Another head hangs lowly)

*

They’d arrived at sun-up; laughed; danced; screeched, and reveled.

My turn came; I hung my head but not in shame. Among the watchers, I knew one cowered. Mama would be proud of me.

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  7. Eerie scene, with the contrast of the celebration and what is about to happen.

    • In the movies, hangings used to be a circus. People travelled from far and wide, selling pies and so on. It was an occasion to cut loose and I went with that. I liked yours too. Everyone has come up with so many different scenarios.

  10. What a teasing little snippet! It feels like it could lead into a much longer and thoroughly fascinating story.

  12. Short and dark. Why does flash so very often take us to the dark side, I’ve often wondered.
I also like the picture you found, it matches the story beautifully.

    • I wonder why flash is dark so much of the time too and I have no answer.
I can’t take credit for choosing the picture. This is a challenge I have joined recently and it was provided as a story idea.

  17. Very teasing. it’s a riddle I can’t work out. Why is one cowering? Where does the noose come in? Has the person been hung – thus hanging their head but not in shame? I need to know!

    • Sorry, Rose. I guess I didn’t do such a good job. The crowd is in a celebratory mood. They’ve come to a hanging. The next one headed for the noose isn’t guilty but he knows who is and he’s sure the guy’s in the crowd, waiting for the one who shares his secret to be silenced.

Crap, just because I understand in my head, doesn’t mean I’m clear. Must work on that. Thanks for our chat.
