Flash in the Pan – Level

“I said STOP.”

Cody twisted around. A rifle barrel pointed level to his head shut his mouth. Lips pressed tight, he waited, breathless. Tense arms shot up.

“You the surveyin’ man?”

Cody’s face stung. “No-pe.”

“Whatcha want then?”

“Hunting and fishing. Got lost.”

Moth-eaten hat man squinted, spewed coal-black tobacco. “Don’t see no rifle.” The click of the hammer masked birdsong.

“Walking. Nice morning.”

“Uh-huh. Git. Watch out fur them snakes.”

Head bent, Cody smirked.

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  6. I love your writing Tess. This really got me thinking, such a great story in so few words. I can see these two characters in my mind even now and all kinds of scenarios exploding in my mind!

  8. You got me. Great characterization. Now, shake it up and make it a Wall Street hedge fund manager, or a mother of three. I’m trying to think outside the box here.

  9. That Cody’s hiding something if you ask me, Tess. I could see it from the very beginning!

  12. I think they both need to watch out…and the old guy needs to install a better security system, guard dogs, a fence or something to keep trespassers out. Definitely think Cody’s up to no good. The old guy could be too. Maybe he set some traps further along the way on his land for trespassers like Cody to stumble on. Who knows.
