I’m slow at the gate, but eventually  I’ll jump in with both feet.

In August I threw my hands up and decided I was worth a Samsung Galaxy Ace II, a student school special no less. I’ve seen the bright and colourful icons on the new phones and felt left behind. Time to upgrade, and I did with a vengeance. The truth is my current tiny cell with a nub for an antenna wasn’t broken but I needed to keep up with new technology not hide behind the old. I have no-one to call, except in an emergency. I have a land line and it rings only on rare occasions. So what? I refused a plan with all the bells and whistles and finagled a 365-day pay-as-you-go-card. Don’t laugh. Finally I’m 21st century-ready if I’m in a spot. If I need to call anyone while away from home.

Whoosh forward four months. Christmas and New Years have come and gone. My older (almost ten year old) granddaughter has graduated from an iPod to an iPad Mini this year. The six-year-old has a tablet. What a waste of money on the one hand, but on the other I know they must keep up with the times.

Apple, iPad Mini

Apple, iPad Mini

“Babcia, everything’s so easy. All you have to do is this and then run your finger across or pretend pinch…” Happy to show me how her iPad worked, she prattled on while my eyes glazed over and my brain turned to thick dehydrated porridge. She gave me that look—that I-knew-you’re-too-too—a smirk.

“Excuse me. I need to visit the lady’s.” I moseyed down the hall, shut the door, paced, and flushed the toilet for good measure. I splashed water on my face, threw my shoulder back and marched back down the hall. By then the girls were into something else in the dining-room.

I popped open my laptop and Googled one computer store after another: Boxing Week Sales were everywhere for iPad Minis. Huh. Used to be specials might be secured on Boxing Day if the supply didn’t run out.

I raised my voice. “I need to go downstairs for another coffee. Be right back.” Nobody noticed my departure.

A new coffee as cover and my Visa card in my pocket, I raced back to my laptop. The day was Monday, December 30th, the afternoon before New Year’s Eve. Time: about 2:00 PM. My fingers raced over the keyboard before stock ran out. I hummed with excitement from head to toe. I didn’t expect my package till after New Year’s Day.

The following morning, my inbox showed confirmation of my purchase plus a tracking number. Regular ground delivery expected: December 31st. Not possible but I couldn’t help tracking all morning. At 11:31 AM the package had been delivered to my neighbourhood mailbox. How does this work? I’m impressed.

Miss. H. wore a Cheshire smile when I told her the news. “I can set it up for you.”

I had to input my e-mail address, then an alternate e-mail, then my life history. “Stop.”

Everything works except for a teeny snag. My security e-mail doesn’t like my password now and I can’t shop at the Apple store yet. I’m anxious to setup my PC Kindle books on my iPad Mini. If I must use electronic means to read e-books let me at least do it from the comfort of my Easy Boy.

Like I said. Slow at the gate but I’m moving forward–somewhat.  Halleluja!

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  1. I’m giving you I’m oh so proud of you hug right now 🙂 Well done and Congrats. I went from a basic phone to an IPhone then I got an IPad, which I’m writing on now. Thought, if I go away would come in handy to write still, but I use it lying on the couch watching TV.. the joys of modern technology! Loved the way you snuck out … Miss H is right just pinch the screen… hope you get your password organised and there will be not stopping you! 🙂 x

    • Thanks so much. Hug back. {{ }}Right now I’m stuck in my calendar no matter how much I’ve pinched and whipped my forefinger across the screen.

As well, I have about two dozen e-books I want to transfer from my PC Kindle to the iPad. Might as well read in comfort rather than be stuck at my desktop if I must read electronically. 😀

  2. So true, Tess. I’m right there with you. Me, though–I’m the tech teacher, so I’m supposed to be cutting edge. I have to adopt everything new so I can flaunt it to my students. Argh.

Do you love your iPad already?

    • Hi Jacqui. I’ve been retired seven years and have become lazy. I had to stay on top of the technology in the office and I worked with engineers!
Anyway, now that I’ve been spurred on by my granddaughter, good things are ahead. 😀

No, I’m stuck. I don’t see my granddaughter on weekends because the family is off somewhere all the time. I’m stuck in my calendar and haven’t been able to find my way to the main menu. Ha ha.

  3. Just got a smart phone and holy cow! It’s a whole computer in a little box! My computer is about 4 years old and my lap top even older. I have a hankering for some new toys. You are my inspiration. Will Miss H set mine up too?

  4. To me you’re a trend setter, lol. We don’t own anything that’s smart BUT just last month started to look and consider. This is encouraging. Bravo! xoxo

    • Sweet of you to say, Paulette but after all the conversations I’ve had here about this subject, it appears I’m the second last person on the planet who finally gave in to bought into the new technology. Ha ha.

  5. Well done Tess! I know how you feel. I had my old faithful Motorola flip phone for 7 years and loved it but it finally gave up the ghost so a few months ago I got a Samsung Galaxy III smartphone. At first I hated it for texting but now I can do it quicker and use it for the internet I sort of like it!! I even have a Kindle App on it. Life moves on whether we like it or not… 🙂

  6. Good for you! I just got back from a visit to my mother’s and step-father’s place. At 71 and 81 respectively, they frequently had their noses buried in their iPads. No lost technology on them! I did, however, have to school my mother a little in Facebook as she doesn’t quite have the site all figured out. Then again, neither do I…

    Enjoy your new toy!

  7. All of my fancy new gadgets and I’m thoroughly enjoying reading an old fashioned made from paper book! 😉 But I do love my gadgets!

Welcome “Babcia”! I love that, by the way.

    • Babcia is Polish for grandma but it sounds like you figured this out already.

I love a challenge and I do believe my granddaughter has spurred me on. I don’t NEED these new toys but everyone else has them and since this is my second childhood, I believe I’m entitled too. 8-:

      • 🙂 I didn’t need a Kindle but husband thought I did. And I admit I like it. But this is the second week in a row I’ve gone to the book store because I like the browsing. The looking through. The feel of it. I’ll keep using the kindle. But not at the expense of giving up the book! And the smart phones….yes I have to admit I love them.

These second childhoods are phenomenal! 😉

Some books can only be had as ebooks. I have a bunch I want to put on my iPad Mini. I agree about browsing in a bookstore. Nothing like it. 😀

  8. Haha, this sounds in part like my own story. I have a Kindel now for the last 4 month but still try to turn the pages manually, JS gave me a super smartphone which I can not figure out, but I am slowly learning to appreciate my old iPad….. But I keep persevering…..maybe I will learn after all!? 🙂 Carina

  9. Yeah, for progress and well done, you. I gave my 84 year old mother an I-Pad for Christmas after she found sporadically using a laptop a hassle and she’s slowly taking to it. The issue is that life is moving more on line and it seems you can get a quicker response from Government Departments through email than the telephone. Enjoy the new toy 🙂

    • All true and I DO believe you cannot shy away from technological progress for much longer.

I blame this leap on my granddaughter, the one with the smirk. She has no idea she challenged me. Ha ha.

  10. I had a semi smart phone and have graduated to a really smart one. I love it but I fear it is one more thing to get addicted to. I also have a tablet which I love. But real books are still the best to read.

    • Yes, I agree books are best paper. I already have about two dozen ebooks on my PC Kindle and wish to transfer them for easier reading.

This is all my granddaughters’ fault, especially the smirking one. 😀

  11. Congrats on mastering an upgrade! Maybe you can tell me what all the bells and whistles are on mine, now. I sorta miss my dumbphone…

    • My dumb phone is unfairly fired. It’s job was small but well carried out and easy to get along with. My eyes were green with envy and I wanted more though I didn’t NEED.

My granddaughter’s smirk is responsible for my leap into the future. 😀

I would love to own an iPad, but I’m going to rather get an actual Apple mac laptop once I know i have an actual job. The toys will come later – if i can get the kids’ arms turned sufficiently 😉

    • I absolutely LOVE my little notebook laptop. Hated it at first because I couldn’t get used to the touch on this keyboard versus my desktop one. It’s so portable too.
The iPad was in preparation of some new things coming up as well as handy scheduling of events and transferring PC Kindle ebooks to read in my Easy Boy chair rather than on my PC. We’ll see how this all pans out.

  13. Congratulations on the upgrade! My husband, the rocket scientist, is the tech savvy one between us. He drug me kicking and screaming into the 21st century a few years ago. I finally gave up my old Nokia and submitted. I have upgraded my smart phone and become an iPad owner with a Kindle app since. It amazes me still that I can have a my entire music library and book library on one small device.

This small device with its apps that fits in my pocket is a navigator/map, stereo, library, phone book/yellow pages, secretary, phone, voice recorder, camera, alarm clock, weather radio/radar, shopping mall, computer, dicta-phone, movie theater, television, game box, flashlight, metronome, compass, language translator, telescope, art box,QR coded coupon book, bank, post office…gosh, I could just go on and on….I am waiting to upgrade to the model that will go into the kitchen, cook supper and wash all of the dishes.

Suffice it to say, I am thrilled. Don’t forget to download the WordPress app, the notifications feature is awesome. When it chimes, my husband says, “Somebody is at your door!”

    • I know! It boggles my mind all the things these new toys are capable of. My new phone’s calendar was a huge WIN for me but I only use the phone for emergencies–no need to phone anyone. I communicate online all the time.
I also bought the iPad because I have almost two dozen ebooks on Kindle for PC and if I must read them electronically, at least I can from the comfort of my Easy Boy.
As well, I’m going on a trip I’ll be talking about soon and these toys were in preparation so that I can stay in touch with my family. 🙂

My cell phone is a cheap track phone without a keyboard so sending texts is very difficult, and I hate to do it anyway.
What happened to calling someone and chatting away until dinner burned?

    • Your last sentence has me on the floor. You are right. Those were the good way of communicating, in private, not walking down the street bumping into people and not even apologizing. 😀

  16. Good for you Tess, it’s important to keep up isn’t it?So far I have done because I LOVE techy toys – I am the techno Mma (my version of Babcia) ! My preference is android and have had several gorgeous phones. A month ago I treated myself to a tablet, it’s so sexy and can even read my appaling handwriting and turn it into text! Although I love my pc I’m finding that I use the tablet, a samsung note far more. 🙂

    • My love my little notebook. At first I hated the keyboard on it because the touch was so different from my desktop. Now I avoid the desktop unless I need to scan or print something.

If it hadn’t been for the sale and the fact I got in on it while the iPads were in stock, I wouldn’t have purchased on. Hope this was a good move and not a waste but then it took all kinds of time to get used to my laptop. 🙂

  17. Although there’s a Tablet in this house somewhere, I hasn’t been used since last spring. Hubby and I play with the thought of getting a new cell phone but never make the journey to Staples or Walmart and continue to use the cell phone with the card of minutes. None of this has anything to do with being stuck in the past however. It has to do with my lack of mobility to use both of my hands, which becomes necessary at times with hand-held devices. I’m more or less stuck with the PC at this point.

    Like

    • Sorry to hear about your hands but am happy about your use of the PC. If it wasn’t for a keyboard, I too wouldn’t be able to communicate.
These two huge leaps into the future are in preparation for a trip I’m taking in about three months. I may well end up taking my little notebook to keep in touch with my family while I am gone. 🙂

Both the phone and then the iPad are in preparation for an upcoming trip this year. I’m trying what what I’ll me more comfortable taking with me: the laptop or iPad to keep in touch with my family as I will be gone 24 days.

Nice to meet all of you forward-moving techies…I just wonder: Will you talk to someone who still doesn’t have a cellphone? I do have a turntable. And a cat (of that counts)…

I only traded in my 2 year old blackberry phone (which was something 2 yrs. ago) for a 5 1/2″ LG2 phone. It’s like a mini computer. I, like you don’t need the phone to talk on as I don’t have much time for that but as my vision isn’t what it used to be the big screen was a real treat to open up site that I go to on the laptop or check social media and the bells and whistles make it so much fun. So just know you are not alone! 🙂

  34. Congratulations on the iPad. I agree – it is important to keep up with technology if we want to maintain communications with our children and grandchildren. I have a love/hate relationship with my iPad – it is a control freak when it comes down to how to do things. (The Apple way, or no way…) But, I have to say that the Facetime feature was wonderful at Christmas when we were thousands of miles away from the family and wanted to talk to them and get the guided tour of how they were celebrating the holiday.

  35. You are so funny, Tess! And way ahead of me. I received a Kindle this Christmas, which is probably the old way I’d have taken the plunge. Haven’t touched it yet, but I know I will before I go traveling next, because it will be so much lighter than bringing books. I still have a dumb phone–not ready to take that plunge, but I will be watching you and learning! Best of luck, and a very Happy New Year to you!
