Happy and Sad

Serious planning has begun. My packing list expands and contracts now and again. The clock is ticking and I feel a rush of excitement.

The past two weeks, my cat, Lady Gaga, has been especially needy. She demands hugs and cuddles in a loud, urgent meow. Never has she looked as tall as these times when she stretches on her hind legs and taps my hip, as if I cannot hear her complain. She looks so mournful, I wonder if she knows about my travel plans. I have been careful not to pull out the suitcase yet. Can you believe that I plan to be so well-organized I’ll only unzip my luggage while she is sleeping and close to my departure date? I’ll throw everything into my suitcase, re-zip and store it upstairs in my daughter’s house until I leave.

I live downstairs

I live downstairs

The sad thing is, I will miss her. I’ve been dreading leaving her. I worry what she’ll feel when I disappear for more than a few hours. True, she will be in her own house. Although she sleeps most of her day away, she wakes on occasion and searches me out like a two-year old. I give her a pat on the head and off she goes to find another spot to sleep again.

During this same time frame, Lady G. has decided walking all over my dining-room table while I sit at my laptop is her right. For a year-and-a-half since we met she didn’t have this habit. She now insists on sitting at my elbow waiting for a pat on the head, a rub under her chin or behind her ear. I can no longer leave my laptop open when I get up for another coffee, a snack or a bathroom break because my furry friend has somehow learned to be indispensable. What gave her the idea to sit on my keyboard? Does she think she’s saving my place?

These helpful sitting sessions have skewed the images on my screen, frozen my mouse as well as the screen, the keypad refused to cooperate and powering off didn’t work. One morning I dashed to get dressed, desperate to race to Best Buy for help. On second thought, I pulled the battery and the normal settings reappeared. Whew. Saved some dollars too. One function I learned about is the f11 function key. It talked beneath Lady Gaga’s tail on one occasion. Must make time to investigate that.

I am home all day and she knows I’ll be back soon if I disappear. No-one will be home as they will be at work and at school. As well, she has scheduled mealtimes. Her caretakers, although they promise she’ll be loved and fed, do not keep to a timetable. Their animals often must remind them the food dish needs refilling.

This is my spoiled furry friend.

This is Barbie the neighbour upstairs with whom Lady G. has a on again / off again relationship. The other cat is older and fussier it seems, but they get along.

This is Max, who sometimes kisses and other times terrorizes Lady G, but she has been known to instigate some of these plays. ( have no idea why this picture turned out so small.)

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  1. Always hard to leave a pet behind, but I’m sure she’ll be well cared for. And think of all the stories she’ll have to tell you when you get back. 😉

  2. Lady Gaga is a beautiful cat! You are so lucky to have met her, and clearly the two of you have a very special connection. And make no mistake about it, she knows something’s up. I had a cat once who (I swear) knew the moment I booked a holiday, and no matter how hard I tried to ‘hide’ the packing, she was fully aware of what was going on and would do her utmost to be underfoot and ‘in my face’ for weeks before I went away (just as Lady Gaga is doing). My two current cats (they’re sisters) seem to know when I’m going out – even if its no further than the grocery store. Cats have a sixth sense we can’t even begin to fathom. She’ll definitely miss you but she will eventually forgive you for leaving her behind.

    • Thanks, Margo. She’s making me feel guilty too because she’s been giving me such penetrating, searching looks when she comes for a cuddle. 😦

      • Bandit (the cat who knew when I was going away) would do the same – AND she’d give me the cold shoulder after I got home. She would literally turn her back on me whenever I came into a room and refuse to sit on my lap for at least 3 or 4 days after I returned from vacation. They sure know how to make us feel guilty.

  3. I love this story Tess, and cats of all ages simply adore attention 🙂 I have started giving my cat Dreamies and now she sits meowing for them at every opportunity, but hey creature comforts and all that, she’s worth it 🙂 I am sure that she will adapt while you are on vacation, and just think of all the treats you can give her on your return 🙂

If you click edit on your posting and click on Max the poodle picture six little white boxes will appear on the edges. Click and hold your mouse over the corner one, any is fine top or bottom and drag your mouse until the picture is at your required size and release the mouse. Result: Your friend Max will be bigger 🙂 Don’t forget to update the posting, it’s on the right hand side.

    Have fun Tess 🙂

    • Why have pets if you can’t pamper them? Dreamies. What a delightful name. Makes me smile.

I’ll miss my little fur ball because we are good buddies and both creatures of habit. I hate to think that will all change when I’m away. Everyone’s so busy these days.

  4. Oh, I know what you mean, Tess. My husband is nuts about our dog. We can’t be gone too long because the dog will need us. Wherever we go, we rush back by 5-6 hours for the dog. We can’t take trips unless one of my children will stay in the house with the dog. Can you believe that?

    Of course you do.

    • Yes, I believe it all too well. When my (upstairs) daughter got Max, the poodle last summer, they caged him when they all went to work because he used to be an outside dog. He’d cry and carry on. I couldn’t stand to have him so unhappy so I’d go get him and bring him down with me. 😀

    • Yes, I’ve left cats for the weekend over the years and they sure know how to give the cold shoulder. I learned to let them be until they were ready to be friends again. I’ve been lucky because every cat I’ve had has been ultra social. 😀

    • Thank you, Joanna. Nineteen more days.
Your cat is gorgeous. These two could be related. Until I got Lady G at the SPCA, I had never seen a cat like her. Since then I’ve seen all kinds. Then when I took her for her first vet appointment, two women came in with plastic tubs of Belgian Shepherds with the brindle colors. 🙂

      • I’m thinking the brindle colors goes by ‘tortoise shell’ for the felines? Love the markings on calicos too. Had a stray gray tabby who must have hooked up with a calico (before I got her spayed, of course).

One of the kittens had all the tabby markings but absolutely striking in the calico colors. I called her Maserati, b/c she had this awesome ‘racing stripe’ that ran the length of her back.

Thanks and happy getting ready for your trip!

  10. Yes, she’ll probably make you pay for it for a while when you get back, but eventually she will gracefully allow you to start petting her again, and it’ll all get back to normal! At least she will be in her own home while you’re away, with the familiar comforts and smells (not that I’m saying your home smells, but you know what I mean!).

    • Thanks, Vanessa. I know this and have had previous experience with leaving previous cats for the weekend.
Lady Gaga’s been giving me these penetrating looks. I know she thinks, Why won’t you just spit out the truth? I know you’re hiding something. 😀

I’m in awe 🙂

  16. Tess – I know how you feel. We have the two shih Tzu dogs and on days when we are going to be gone all day we don’t worry about them unless we are going to be gone longer than we thought. However, last week we had to take Tom’s dog to a vet 4 hours away for a 2nd opinion and that meant my dog would be home alone all day. She’s never been alone for a single day in her entire life. I worried about how she would cope with being alone. She will be 15 in May. Everything seemed to go ok but we have to take Tom’s dog back to the same vet this coming Tuesday.
Cats are such creatures of habit and they aren’t appreciative when you change their routine.
Keep giving her those extra hugs and snugs.

  19. All pet owners will empathize with your kitty’s anxiety. If we travel anywhere, we try to keep the suitcases hidden for as long as possible. Pets are smart — they can smell change! And they DO miss their people. I sometimes look after the hound that lives across the street when her folks travel. She has settled in here so completely that she often pulls them across the street during a walk just to say hello and come in for a short visit. She loves us…very sweet. Your kitty will be fine and be there to greet you enthusiastically when you get home. Definitely something to look forward to.

  20. I have a cat like Lady G (love the name by the way), who I worry about when I’m away too. I get phantom rubs up against my shin in the morning sometimes when we are separated. Our pet connections run deep, don’t they? If it’s China you’re going to…then have an epic time…and come back to blog about it, and pat your furry friends on the head again. can’t wait to hear all about it. Safe travels!

  21. Seeing that you’re doing your travel planning, I MUST mention something you need to know. Luggage gets lost and seems to do so easily overseas. It does get found eventually but it can take several days. Pack at least 2 days worth of all under garments and 1 full outfit in your carry-on bag along with the toiletries.

I urge you to do this. I didn’t. Big… BIG mistake! I had 1 day’s worth of under garments in my carry-on along with other things that should have gone in with my luggage. Because my luggage took long to get out of Paris, I had to have my husband go out to buy some clothes for me. He got hot pink! Yuck!

  22. I know. I always miss my SamCat the Ripper when I am gone away. Animals are smart, she senses you leaving and things aren’t normal because of you getting ready. She doesn’t know you are leaving to have fun, just knows and senses separation. But she will be okay and you are going to have fun and she may not speak to you for a bit when you come back home, but she’ll get over it. Snd she has some lovely furry friends to distract her until you do!

  23. Do not worry, she will be fine so long as she is in her own territory. She will miss you and will welcome you home upon your return. This comes from a woman owned by cats who has traveled for years.

Remember, carry your own soap if you have sensitive skin. Carry your own shampoo and your own toothpaste too. Do not weigh yourself down with incidentals, especially jewelry! If you take medicine, carry it in your purse on-board with you. As strange as this will sound to you, take all the underwear you will need for your trip, do not rely on being able to do laundry. Ask me if you want other hints.

You are so sensitive not packing in front of your kitty! She knows something is up! That is a kitty with an attitude and a lot of spunk! (Kind of like her owner?)

  26. Your Lady will be ok but when you get home she will make you pay. She is a beauty…wonderful eyes. I know someone who is a cat nanny. Really. She daily visits cats who have traveling humans and even some who are home alone when their human works all day. She has even lived with a cat…in the cat’s house while his mama was in the hospital!
BTW what does the F11 key do?

    • A cat nanny. What a charming idea! 😀

I heard a woman’s voice beneath kitty’s tail but not what she said. I just googled and got this:
      h30434.www3.hp.com – 1168 × 214 – Search by image
The user guide states that the F11 action key mutes or restores the PC’s sound. The led corresponds with the sound being on or off.

  32. Ahh Tess, at last getting to your wonderful posts, I’ve had very frustrating WP problems all afternoon but got there in the end 🙂 I know just what you mean about your lovely Lady Gaga (great name btw!) wanting to be right by your laptop and making the keys ‘dance’ beneath her tail – lovely description. My tabby Maisy has this need to sit right next to me in much the same way so that I have to reach over her to use my mouse and never mind my shoulder hurting, just so’s she’s as comfortable as she needs to be 😉
Lady G will miss you, that’s for sure, and what a cutie she is (and Barbie and Max too) but I’m sure she will be well looked after. I’m also sure that she will definitely tell you all about it when you return in no uncertain terms 🙂
