Writing Process Blog Meme

boy-148071_640The supportive and generous Jacqui Murray at http://worddreams.wordpress.com nominated me for this blog meme. Thank you, Lady. Long ago, I bowed out of any manner of nominations or awards, but this is a tad different.

I cannot recall how or when I stumbled upon her site, but that was my lucky day. Jacqui’s blog is a writer’s premier resource, chockfull of valuable writing advice and guidelines galore. Please check her out.

The rules for this meme are to answer four questions about your writing method and nominate three new people. You can accept or not, but come on, this will be fun, won’t it?

What am I working on at the moment?

I’m sorting through and sprucing up short stories for submission before summer reading close. Matching the correct magazine to the story is my biggest headache and time consuming. Do I do contests or pay fees? At first I did for a couple, but no longer. I am retired after all and fees add up, although submitters usually receive a ‘free’ subscription in return.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I’ve only a simple and unexciting answer to this question. I believe my writing fits into general fiction and not any sub-category. I tend to write about a variety of subjects which don’t include fantasy, sci-fi or horror etc. I’m more into everyday common-man-situations readers might associate with and cheer. However, I am tickled if the stories are entertaining when I release them.

Why do I write what I do?

I write to entertain myself, to analyze situations to better understand them, and to sort out the clamour in my head. I write what interests me most at any given time.

How does my writing process work?

The middle of the day works best for me because I use up mornings to ease into the work after I’ve read the paper, my e-mail and blogs, and swept away diversions so I can concentrate.

I have a spiral notebook within reach to scribble fleeting ideas before they vanish. However, my handwriting has degenerated to chicken scratch and is difficult to decipher if I don’t slow down. Most of the time I write like a demon and can’t make it out later. My favourite writing tools are my laptop from draft to finish and real deadlines.

I don’t accomplish as much as I should because I’m disorganized and easily distracted. Sometimes, I type as fast as I can to capture what’s going through my head and then leave it for another day because I’m not always sure what to do with the information right away.

When the going is hot—not often enough—my day vanishes. I’ve typed the first draft and filled in holes, patched bridges and edited as much as I can. I then put away the piece for another day when I can read it like a stranger. Only once or twice have I written a short story from start to finish in one day and been satisfied. Believe it or not, I enjoy editing the most because then I take my time.

These are my three nominees. You are not obligated to join in. Remember no-one will come to your house if you’re not up for participation.

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  2. Look at New Pages, Tess. They have a Call for Submissions. Also, check out Duotrope. For a small fee, they have a search engine for submissions. Well deserved award, my dear!

  5. Fun to learn about your process. Like you, I actually prefer the editing phase. Well, that and the initial story creation phase in outline form where there’s no pressure. But once I start that first draft, I feel so frenzied to get everything out, that it can be a bit stressful. I relax more once I get to the editing.

    • No, Gilly, not at all. By doing this blog meme I had to really work it all out and now I have a better idea of how I manage my time. I still need to stick some reading time into my day and read blogs less. How to do that?

  8. It’s interesting to see how others go about writing. I don’t even know if I can describe mine as a process. Now I have to think about it!

  9. Not sure I could ever write a long piece or even a short piece of fiction, so kudos all around.

    • I don’t write many essays but I’d like to. Fiction to me is a freedom of creativity. All I have to worry about is getting the ‘facts’ straight and I’m still working on it.

Through signing on to this process blog meme, I’ve been forced to figure out what it is I do all day. Now I have a better idea and hopefully can improve my schedule. I’m only a newbie to this writing game but even I will admit I’ve learned a thing or two. 🙂

  10. I am so delighted you were given this award! I stopped accepting awards early this year, but I do so appreciate your nominating me for this. The questions though are very thought provoking and I think a post about them is in order, as well as publicly thanking you and answering the questions. I truly thank you so much for picking me as one of the three nominees for this.

  14. Tess, I got to this piece after midnight. I am honored and amazed to be one of your nominees. I had to go look up meme, which strikes me as pretty funny at this hour. I’m with Carl D’Agostino above! I shall do my best for you. 🙂

I like that you write the stories and then look for where to place them vs. you like the magazine, etc. and create a story for it. Both involve hard work. I laughed aloud at your writing like a demon and then being unable to read it later. So maddening – such genius ~ it is there, yet indecipherable! Hmm, send it to NSA and see if their code breakers could crack it?

In defense of your mornings: You are not wasting time in your a.m., you are priming the pump, revving the engine – it takes frittering effort to get 8 cylinder performance from a 4 cylinder engine. (I am a 1.5-2 cylinder in the a.m.)

So glad you’re home and mayhap up from your bed now from that nasty cold sinus thing. 🙂 Huntie

    • I’ve seen ‘meme’ here and there in the last couple of years. It is an odd word. When I looked it up the meaning wasn’t all that satisfying but hey, what do I know?
Thank you, Huntie. You are sweet. I rev my engines and then find I’m out of gas. 😀

  16. My handwriting used to be small yet easy to read. Because I’m left handed, my slant goes the opposite way of most people’s. Over the years, my handwriting has become sloppy and can’t seem to find those lines that are on every page in a spiral. My writing is all over the page. Because I’m kind of a semi-recluse due to physical challenges and the PC is so readably available with the keyboard plugged into it, I sit in my high-backed padded desk chair and type away instead of using notebooks.

    • I l.o.v.e. hard-covered lined notebooks, spiral bound notebooks. You should see the stash I’m ‘saving’ because they’re much too pretty for my scribble.

The handy notebooks I do use is for emergencies. They have everything in them: Notes to myself, story lines, phone numbers, phone messages. This way I don’t have pieces of paper all over the place. I date everything (as if that makes a difference). 😀

  19. Interesting post Tess, I always love to hear about how others go about things. You say you don’t accomplish as much as you should, but I would say you probably accomplish a LOT – I think this is one of the things that we all think about ourselves, we always feel like we’re just not doing enough, or that if we were more organised we could accomplish so much more! Maybe we should all just cut ourselves some slack 🙂

  20. Really enjoyed this Blog Meme and reading about your writing process Tess, congratulations! I know what you mean about sometimes typing madly away to capture what is in your head at that time. My handwriting, although used for poetry when the mood overcomes me, is becoming worse by the day… 😉

I’m going now to follow not only the individual that nominated you but the three you passed the award on to. This, for me, is the best way to find new and truly interesting well written blogs. Happy writing and getting settled back into your digs.
