UPS

A jarring gong shattered the silence. Iris slapped her book on the end table and sighed. She kicked back the footrest and forced her wiry frame out of the recliner.

“Coming.” She whipped open the door, auburn hair springing.

A round silhouette waved a contraption towards her. “Delivery for Mrs. Collingwood.”

Iris blinked in the sunlight and scrutinized the UPS uniform and truck in the drive. “Yes?”

“Sign here, please.” He thrust a package forward. “Good day.”

Sheer fabric of emerald, the colour of dreams and desire, lay nestled in cloud-like froth. “Oh!” A heart-shaped card tumbled to the floor.

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  10. Great job, as usual. I like how you use such strong verbs throughout the first part; shattered, slapped, kicked, etc, you can feel the irritation and almost anger in her as she goes to the door. Then it completely turns around, all tension lost as the language shifts, and we feel the soft pleasure of emerald surprise.

The only word that seems a tiny bit out of place is sonorous. It seems too soft for a sound that shatters. Just a thought.

Overall, wonderful use of language to draw the reader directly and swiftly into her feelings, and then switch it all around with such grace!

  13. So much emotion in so few words. Feelings leap from the page and we’re drawn in, I could instantly identify. I hate it when the UPS delivery person shows up and wants me to sign, especially when I’m working. Then, suddenly and as always with your flash fiction, you give us a love story. With emerald I automatically think of delicate and precious because Tom has taught me that of all the precious stones he works with, the highest quality emerald is the most fragile. The heart shaped card falling to the floor took my breath away and sent me into a day-dream. Is their a gorgeous gown for an evening out with a lover or could it be something hot and sexy for an evening to come? I must stop day-dreaming and get back to work. Dang!

    • Dreams are great! Even daydreams are awesome. Glad the story stirred thoughts and emotions, Sheri. Reading is subjective, yes, but you have been my best subject with this story. Yay. Thank YOU. ❤ 3

  15. The contrast between such a normal and annoying occurrence and the mysteriously beautiful contents of the package is an intriguing one.
I don’t want to know what it actually is, I just love that it exists.

  18. An enticing gift.
I love the “colour of dreams and desire.” I remember seeing a film version of a beautiful thing in a book, and being terribly disappointed. I guess no real thing can be as beautiful as what we imagine when beauty is described…

Bye for now: Am limiting myself to reading 5 posts a day, to make it last 🙂
