This week’s prompt  … the hips and haws signal …+ 100 words

(Explanation: These are rose-hips and hawthorn berries)

GRANNY’S

The kettle screamed like a train whistle. Ivy raised a forefinger to signal her return, but Kay followed her.

“The photo albums I found in the attic this spring? I brought one today.” She leaned against the granite counter hugging bound hardcovers and watched her sister arrange the tea treats.

“Have we seen these before?”

“Nope. They’re Granny’s.”

Ivy placed the tray on the dining-room table. “Recognize anyone?’

“Yes, us.”

“Us?”

“Remember Granny explaining the hips and haws signal fall, and the right time to pick them for her wonderful jellies?”

“Granddad’s camera—we’re helping—too young for school— Wha?”

Smash.

“Hot-hot-hot. Save the photos!”

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  7. Hips and haws, jellies, sisters, photos, grandpa, teas, treats, and grandma. Only you could weave that all into a 100 word story with a punchline!

    • I’m not sure about that, but I do glow in your interest. 🙂 ❤
Thank you, Rebecca. I had no idea was hips and haws were.

      • Hips I’d heard of, haws was new to me. I had to look it up. Since you had mentioned unavailability of a book on amazon, I checked a source I’ve used several times out of curiosity. They are a chain and I’ve been in their brick and mortar and they also sell like amazon through dealers–at times. To compare prices it’s worth checking. Half Price Books is located mostly in the southwest U.S. I think.

      • Thanks Rebecca. I didn’t have a clue either. 😦
There’s another place, I’ll have to ask my friend (also in the US) which ships books discounted and no charge. I’ll let you know. I just had it in my hand a few days ago. Will let you know. ❤

I had NO idea what hips and haws were either.Julia, who does the prompts, lives in England. Talk about a frenzied self-education. Hope she understands my take as well. Not POSITIVE I’m right. ❤ Life is a learning experience. Yes?

I have been tempted to try and make hip jelly, but thankfully all my photos are safely digitised, so they are safe!

  16. Cute story! I enjoyed sitting at the table with the tea treats and flipping through Granny’s album. Being a scrapbooker, I quickly dove for the photos and saved them at the last minute- so all’s well that ends well! (grin) I’m sure this would have been in your story had you not been confined to 100 words!

Such a good job at conveying a mood (warm, happy) and a mishap (oh nooo!).

  17. What a delight! Given my love of photos, the first thing I thought was save the album. Then oh no, I hope they weren’t burned then back to save the pictures.

    • Thank you, Val. You are exceptionally kind. ❤
I love old photographs. There's something to be said for pictures save electronically, but there's nothing like sitting with a friend, or alone, looking through a picture album. I'm always careful around liquid. Sigh. ❤ ❤

  19. Oh no!! I hope the photos were saved…! This piece tells such a sweet story yet shows how in life, even when we are doing the most innocent of tasks, a disaster such as this can happen when we least expect it and in our own homes. I love how you weave so much through a story in so few words my friend. You are the queen of flash fiction 🙂 ❤ 😀

I’ve never heard of hips and haws – is it the “autumn is here” signal?

    Like

    • I hadn’t heard of them either. It’s an English term. I had to research to understand what I could mold out of this term. Yes, it is a signal autumn has arrived because that’s when the beeries are ready.
