This week’s prompt is …as I rose in the dark… +100 words

WHO-WHO?

I tossed and turned, but sleep eluded me. A quivering shadow snaked past the window without crunching footfall. An owl hooted. As I rose in the dark, the front door exploded. Books and debris battered the walls and floor. Knick-knacks smashed and glass shattered. I dove beneath the covers.

Breath ragged and muscles cramped, sweat shot out of my every pore. I smelled bad. I’d once heard this cottage was haunted but— A Halloween trick, then?

“Derek—that you?”

The door slammed shut. Hair drenched, I peeked out and gasped air. Flashlight beams flickered about.

“Who’s there?”

Creak.

“Why are you in my bed?”

“Uncle Frank?”

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  1. When an “Uncle Frank” invades your bed that is worse than any Halloween horror.

  2. “I’m getting a little LONG in the tooth…” you say in bio blurb above. I don’t think my teeth are getting longer but my gums receding. However my afternoon grandpa naps are getting longer. Much longer.

  10. It always amazes me how folks can tell a story in so few words! I’m impressed, my friend. Hope you are having an awesome week!

  12. Haha…I was about to say just the same thing as Teagan! My first thoughts exactly…what the devil is Uncle Frank up to? Spooky stuff, great flash Tess. I wouldn’t go to that cottage alone though. Especially as she saw shadows but heard no footprints… 😮 😈

  13. And Halloween has started. You are so versatile, Tess. How do you come up with all this???

    • 😀 😀 I channeled Stephen King. Didn’t think WiFi could pick up his signal, although it was mighty weak.

This was harder because I don’t do scary but decided to try because Halloween is on its way. Mwahahaha.

      • PS: Thought I should mention, two of your recent comments at Veggies…landed in the spam bin. Don’t know why. Thought you might want to know, in case it’s happening at other blogs too. I’m glad I found them before I clicked the delete button!

      • It’s been happening for well over a week. Had two requests to get it fixed. The second complaint worked and it’s fixed as of a couple hours ago, but thanks, that’s the sort of thing I would want to know.
        I noticed when I typed a comment, some–yes SOME–worked, some just disappeared.

  15. Need to have a follow-up Tess to find out more. Very scary. Have you actually experienced some of those feelings? Very realistic if not!

  16. Great horror story, Tess. I’m guessing that the bed used to be uncle Frank’s before he died. 😯

  17. Ooh, a bit of a sinister twist with a Halloween theme. I like the writing, Tess, but the story is resting oddly in my mind… chilling, actually.

  18. If Uncle Frank isn’t an ax murder this is very bad … very good story telling there Tess.
