SEVEN Little LETTERS

“Let me explain—”

The uniform’s hand flew up. “Silence. Passport.” Crisp pages snapped between thickened fingers.

“Boris, see about the bag.” Uniform trousers swept past Mike. Slam.

“It’s a mistake.”

“Quiet.” The scarred fist smacked the desk; the chair creaked. “Travelling alone?”

“No. Yes. What’s this about?”

“I ask questions. Not you.”

“What about freedom of speech?”

The desk giant threw back his head and roared. “Your country maybe. This my country.” His mustard yellow teeth retreated.

“My mother—”

“What?”

“Sick…help her come home.”

Boris returned; they conferred.

“You have freedom visit my jail.”

“Lawyer—?”

“Boris fine lawyer.”

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  8. Tess your words are so powerful I found myself leaning into the screen and becoming more anxious by the second. Thank heavens you didn’t have any more words!

  9. I think this could still happen in some parts of the world and you’ve brought the possibility to life!

    • I believe it does in present day…I read it in our newspapers. What’s the charge? Can’t go home? Families band together. Years go by. I’m not saying all these people are innocent or guilty, I just point out it still happens.

  14. Wow! Sometimes I feel like that coming home at my own airport, lol. I can’t help but wonder what country this story was in? 🙂

  15. Excellent! It reminded me that I really should get back to post about the experiences in my life.

I can’t imagine where this airport in your story is, although I can’t visualize it being in Europe.

  16. Once again, you’ve left me hanging. What country is this anyway so I may avoid it? China?

  17. I traveled to countries like that. Learned it the hard way to bite my tongue. Even had to look different, had to hide my eyes and hair. The freedom that we know is not everywhere guaranteed. Well done my friend!

  18. “His mustard yellow teeth retreated.” Now that’s a great sentence!

    • Thanks so much, Sherri. Those teeth would scare the you-know-what out of me. Not everyone has a dental plan or care if they do. Travel these days IS scary especially foreign language countries. Who do you turn to? 👿
