Hardrive bad on old (almost four-year-old) laptop. Instead of replacing at $200.00, I decided to splurge for a new one. Read online the store offers trade-ins of old laptop towards new. Managed to get $32.00 for it. The $60.00 + tax I paid for diagnostics can be (will be) used towards cost of setup of new laptop.
The model I liked, no-one had in stock and this model has been phased out, but the young fellow waiting on me asked if I’d be interested in the floor model. I had nothing to lose so I asked him if he might get me a better deal because of that. Saved $90.00.Total credits $182.00.
Am waiting for phone call to pick up. Hope coming home will be headache-free and good to go out of the box.
My desktop only gets one bar s.l.o.w. internet connection.

Fingers crossed the floor model comes problem free. Sounds like you’ll need it far more often than the desk top.

Yes, I love a laptop. I get great internet connection on my dining-room table, but in a pinch, I’m grateful to have this old desktop and s.l.o.w. connection when it works.
Thanks for the visit, David. Massive Hugs back. XX

Thank you for asking. I live in the basement of a house and my desktop is located at the opposite end to where the modem is located upstairs, and a couple of walls in between. My laptop works better on the dining-room table. At least I get four bars there. My PC location forces the internet to cut out every so often. Ugh. Can’t wait till my laptop is ready. 😀

Connecting that desktop to your router (the thingy that allows you to have wireless internet) with an Ethernet cable can most likely improve the desktop ‘s speed. That’s what we did, when we had two non-wireless desktops. The cable guy drilled a (hidden) hole thru the floor. Always good to have backups and options.

I hope you aren’t going to be confronted with Windows 8. Mr R brought a new desktop, thinking it was for me, but I ran a mile when I couldn’t come to grips with it, plus my family history cds didn’t work. Fingers crossed Tess.

Normally i’m all for getting things repaired… not so with computers. I’ve seen so many people keep throwing money into a computer, and it never does what they want. I think you made a good choice. Mega hugs!

Thank YOU. There’s a HUGE reason I don’t use my desktop other than it’s s.l.o.w., it craps out whenever it wants. Haven’t used it in ages and it’s been a love / hate relationship till I bought my laptop and took over the dining-room table at which location all things internet kept me happy, till it croaked. 😦

I have been told by the computer gurus and geeks that 5 years is about all you get out of a laptop. Mine is at 4 and sputtering along. Won’t be long and I will be shopping in greater techland. What a botber.

Though I was somewhat in shock after phone message from ‘the shop’, I knew the end was coming since the spring. I ticks me off when I hear a young peron in a computer store not understand that I do NOT ne use iTunes. 😀 I expect a floor model doesn’t take as much abuse as a returned puchase. 😮
I can’t keep up with techlogy and don’t know when this is going to come back and bite me. Lucky today is all I know. 😀 😀

I wish these things were built to last longer! My laptop is nearly 5 now and struggling to keep up with me. I’ve heard Windows 8 is awful so I never bothered with it – but now this strange icon has appeared at the bottom of my screen urging me to get Windows 10! I didn’t even know there was such a thing. I’m torn between getting it now or just getting a new laptop. Either way it’ll mean scary new technology to wrap my head around. What a pain!
Good luck with your new laptop – you are one brave lady!

Thank you. Thank you, Annabelle. I’m not new to laptops but I had no idea the start button would be on the side like way back when. I brought the new ‘baby’ home and couldn’t even turn it on. Isn’t that a wonderful beginning? I found instructions among all the icons but haven’t had time to read them yet. Maybe I will later today. I hate change, and we all know how developers of software love to tinker and keep changing things after we have become comfortable.
I have the same icon for Windows 10 and I registered before my previous box of buttons and bolts died on me. It’s been frustrating and I am still going between my slow desktop (I’m grateful for it) and this new-fangled (?sp) laptop. I’m every so happy I managed to tally up some credits against the new purchase. I wish you good luck. I wish by now laptops cost around the same as chrome books since they don’t last anyway.
I cannot take credit for bravery. I had to jump whether I wanted to or not. How’s that for democracy? 😀 😀 😀

Did Windows 10 work at all on your old laptop before it died? Or was it Windows 10 that killed it?!

My laptop was a lemon from the get-go. It was a return and I saved $100 when I bought it. Anyway, it began blue-screening in March of this year and sometimes crashed two and three times a day. It had also blue-screened in year one and the Geek Squad at the computer place couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it. Long story short, I had Windows 7 on that one. Windows 8 came with my new HP picked up last Friday.
Even before my laptop crashed, I found a ‘window’ icon on the bottom of my screen and wondered what the heck it was. It announced I can signup for a FREE upgrade to Windows 10 when it becomes available end of June (or is it July?). I decided to go for it. My new laptop gave me the same icon so I’m scrambling with Windows 8 in the short term and adding to my misery when Windows 10 comes out. That dang word ‘f.r.e.e.’ makes me do stupid things. 😀 😀 😀

Great deal! Ensure that they clean your old laptop though. There are programs which are run on trade-in’s to ensure so data can be stolen.

I have no shame when it comes to my money. Still with all the credits it still cost over $550, which included $99 for setting up and $99 for extended warranty, which includes support I need for three years. Didn’t know how to turn it on when I brought it home. 😀 😀 Yeah, it has a side button like they had years ago. 😀

I bought an HP Pavilion. We’re still getting to know each other and argue a LOT. I didn’t want a huge laptop. My last one had a 11″ screen and this one is 13.5 and small enough to carry anywhere. The screen flips back so the keyboard is behind and I can use it as a touch screen (think iPad), but I didn’t buy it for that. Of course, you never know… 😀

Thanks for sharing Tess. I have 2 15″ laptops ( the year old one was to replace the 4 yr old one that now works better than the new one :() and a large desktop. I’m looking into a 13″ good laptop that is easier to travel with, yet has enough storage and gigs, yet offers good performance. I’ve been searching around for months for deals and reviews and it seems where the storage is, performance isn’t great, or vice versa. It’s daunting! 🙂

This one isn’t lightening speed but lots faster than the previous one. It has 465 Gigs of storage.
I hoped to hold out till beginning of school in the fall for a sale, but no luck.
