THE SURPRISE
Sheila raced to the side-board and wrenched the drawer open. Nothing. The grandfather clock gonged three times. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Where is it?
The front door whooshed open and slammed shut. Footsteps thumped down the hall.
“Mother.”
“School out early?”
“It’s Friday.”
“Oh…”
Julie swatted the air. “Going to change.”
Her daughter gone, Sheila hustled to the computer console, yanked the drawer, and tossed envelopes around. Aha!
“What’s that?”
“Wha—?”
The smile on Julie’s face lit her eyes. A charming dimple surfaced. “Tell me. Italy or Paris?”
“Both. We leave March Break.”
“Is Daddy coming?”
