Life and scribbles on the far side of SIXTY-FIVE

Baffled and Bewildered

As far back as I can remember, I’ve used two (paper) calendars in my house: one in the kitchen to organize appointments; the other in the bathroom for thoughts, books and authors I’ve finished reading and stuff I need to remember to do. Old habits die hard. What can I say?

Every year, my local newspaper delivers The Milk Calendar (free—and with interesting recipes inside), but I am only interested in the large blocks of space afforded me to make notations on days an idea etc. strikes me. Last year I was lucky because I spoke up and someone had an extra calendar. This year, I broke down and purchased a second calendar at Walmart (only .97 cents—big deal). Had I asked around, I could have obtained a free one again.

Earlier in January, I stood in line at The 99-cent Depot (who are they kidding?) to pay for a couple of plastic baskets to keep various stacks of paper sorted ($2.00 each). My eyes fell on a delicious shade of teal nail polish while I waited in line. For $1.25 I figured, why not, and stepped back to grab a bottle.

Later, I was disappointed because the finish felt rough to the touch. The next morning I wandered up the stairs (early morning dark, seven-ish a.m.) to pick up the newspaper on the first landing. Yellow flashes of light caught my eye. I did a double-take only to be startled by my glow-in-the-dark fingers. First thought: ack—radio activity! On checking the bottle, no reference to anything but nail polish was evident. I lost no time in removing the colour!

Christmas sales were still on when I dragged myself out of the house to pick up some necessary groceries at Walmart in early January (only because it’s close by). I wandered over to the shoe department afterwards, specifically to look at slippers. For $5.00 each I bought two different pair.

One dark morning, while making a sleepy run down the hall around four or five a.m., I noticed sparks underneath my feet as they hit the floor. What? Radio active soles?  OK, I’m not totally nuts and I’ll be the first to agree I’m hot stuff, but really, what makes me so HOT to cause static electricity instantaneously? It’s not radio activity, right?

I’ve been programmed to embrace change most of my life, but it seems to be happening at an alarming pace. It’s easier to accept what I understand. Imported slippers and nail polish? Is my problem that I’ve been out of the loop the past bunch of years?

Ack.

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  1. Some old habits are worth keeping if they’re keeping our worth (and sanity!). Love the 2-calendar idea.

  2. Maybe you need a humidifier to keep the sparks at bay. Don’t have a clue about the nail polish. Bet tweeners love it though.

  5. I love paper calendars. I know a lot of people just store their appointments and all that electronically, but you can’t beat having something hanging on the wall that you can glance at easily. I love our calendar this year, it’s a really nice one that my kids bought me, it’s wider than normal and has columns so that we can write our names at the top of each one, and individually see what each of us in the house is doing.

    • That’s a marvelous idea, Vanessa. When it was my daughter and me, I only needed one calendar. I have to be greedy and need two just for me. I have so much to remember. Ha ha.

Your 2013 calendar sounds like it’s just up my alley with lots of room to scribble on.

  6. Tess… sparks of slippers? Blimey. I usually suffer from the regular static electric shock, but nothing like this! Eek! Maybe the effect was enhanced by the nail polish…!

  8. Always have a paper calendar in our house – Red Sox, of course. Makes it far easier to co-ordinate everyone at a glance. As for the static electricity, it’s because you have a spark for life!

  9. The pace of change is rapid, no doubt. Perhaps, though, it only seems MORE rapid because your eyes are more focused on what’s happening around you :>) Too many go through life half-blind…

Everything’s changing at an alarming rate – I prefer the timelessness of my house where everything stays the same all the time 😉

    • A person might take up reading in the bathroom but then wonder about a date. With the calendar in sight, a person might resolve a question without rushing or trying to remember to check out the calendar in their office or kitchen. Now, I’m laughing too, Tricia, while I try to be delicate…

  12. Because I work at two different oversized desks in my home office I have desk top calendars, I scribble on them both, notes thoughts, other stuff. I keep appointments electronically. I keep a journal.

Change is great, but there are somethings just should remain the same.

  13. Two calendars in the house, isn’t that normal and required? 🙂
Yes, you ARE hot stuff, and it’s possible all that hotness got transferred to your fingers and toes, but yeah, it would freak me out too.

Hahaha… 😆 That really made me laugh. And then the part about the spark-producing slippers… 🙂

Nice going through your old posts today. I enjoyed it.

  17. I just read this one, you are amazing how you make ‘shopping’ such a great read, loved every sentence and wanted more. I agree about $2? Shops. I bought a pair of slippers once, put them on and stuck to my kitchen floor. They had a ‘non slip sole’ but gripping like glue was ridiculous…:)
