Wuchan: Day 12, Part 3- The Cruise Ship

A quick supper was offered shortly after our arrival on the cruise ship. Although, we’d been provided with a meal during our flight, I have no memory of what it had been. Salad is all I remember at dinner on the ship around 8:00 p.m. Most everyone in our group tucked into romaine salad because we’d been told food served on board was washed in bottled water. Our first non-Chinese food in 12 days!

No spirits were free on our first night, but local beer and wine were promised beginning with the next day’s lunch and onward. Of course, we could purchase a bottle of wine if we wanted one.

Soft drinks, water, coffee, local beer and wine would be gratis, as much as we wanted. Any alcohol, other than the local product supplied, had to be purchased. (i.e. Australian wine: Jacob’s Creek was $40.00 a bottle) Chinese wines are competitive world-wide and supposedly quite good. I didn’t understand why imported wine was on offer. Why not push their own top-of-the-line wines for tourist sampling and free advertising?

The Importance of the Yangtze River:

Sue had trouble opening our room safe. We advised the Registration desk and a young girl with limited English arrived. She wasn’t successful, but left for help. It took some finagling and at last, the man (non-English speaking) set the safe to rights.

Our room was a little cramped, but that’s to be expected and we’d lucked our with a balcony.

After our welcome, yet unexpected buffet, (I can’t remember anything but the greens and lots of vegetables), I asked one of our group if I he had a corkscrew I might borrow. Indeed he did. Meanwhile, I took a chance, (adventurous me) and asked at the bar  if I might borrow a cork screw temporarily. They gave me one. Remember the wine I purchased off Nanjing Road during our previous day’s shopping spree? It was good, considering the price of wine on boardindeed a bargain.

There wasn’t time to allow my wine to breath. Still, it wasn’t bad at $12.00 CAD (label name Dynasty, the other one advertised as decent, had been The Great Wall, I think). This is around the price we’d pay for a similar product at home.

I enjoyed two half-glasses before bed while typing up my China notes. Sue wanted to sleep so I cut it short. Other nights I’d been the party pooper; tonight was her turn. I would have liked to stay up another half-hour to complete my notes, but it had been a long day and I fell into bed. The ship had begun to move and I fell asleep.

For the first time since the start of this trip, I felt my cat, Lady Gaga’s absence and missed my fur ball. We’re only half-way home, and I don’t know if I can wait that long to see her. I wonder what she’ll do when I get home. Will she pout and turn up her tail, or come running for a hug?

 NOTE:

I have been fighting with WP last night and the past two hours this morning. It kept freezing up on me. Now I have a headache.

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  1. I found a natty little corkscrew that separates into two pieces and can be attached to a key ring – it is invaluable! WordPress has been having all sorts of problems it seems!

    • Thanks, Andrew. I hadn’t thought of a corkscrew when I packed. Now I still have the one from the ship, ready and waiting for the next time.

Still, I may see if I can find one for my keychain. I have three different ones in my kitchen drawer.

WP is not behaving. My words jump all over the place, the lines have no spacing between them in the Reply box but ok when I hit Reply. I couldn’t even edit my own post yesterday. Internet was working. It would be nice if an advisement was sent out. Oh well. It’s free.

  2. Your stateroom looks like it was quite nice. I love the gentle rocking of the boat at night. Is a great sleep aid. 🙂

  3. Shame on WordPress for giving you a headache. It’s given me a few too. In fact it seems that all the technology is rising up. My personal computer has been freezing up, then the one at work got in on the act… Blame it on sun spots i guess.

However, it was another fascinating post. So thanks for working through the WP issues. Huge hugs! ❤ 😀

One of my planned reads of the week – as I travel and suspect many of you too, with Tess on her trip through China – I am also glad to know that it was a WP problem and not my operating skills that caused me problems posting this morning.. Thanks Tess and I will have a glass if I may.

  6. Very nice looking stateroom. And, Lady Gaga is adorable. 🙂

  7. I have never tried Chinese wine. I have, however enjoyed drinking Chinese beer. I don’t find the WP editor particularly good so create my posts in Microsoft Word and cut and paste into WP. However that isn’t perfect as Microsoft itself is prone to crashing sometimes!

    • Their beer is pretty good and the wine isn’t different from ours. Wine is wine. Some wines with high alcohol that they told us about I don’t consider wine. More like white lightening. Ha ha.

I always create my posts in Word first. That way I won’t get a time out if the Internet decides to play nasty as well.

Indeed, Microsoft Word has been giving me grief lately. I have no idea what gives.

  8. Tess–your diary of your China trip is fascinating! And can hardly believe you are only at the half-way point! Looking forward to reading more of your trip. What a fantastic collection of memories you have accumulated. . . . 🙂 Judee

    • Ugh. I always write my posts in Word and then paste into WP. Works fine for me. This time when I pasted, every word was bolded I found a double word, butI could NOT highlight and delete. Just some of the nutty things last night.

  10. Lovely to have a look at your room on the ship. Sometimes that is the way when traveling that it isn’t until we are headed home then suddenly we miss those waiting for us. 🙂
Sorry WP is giving you grief. I seem to be lucky here. Knock on wood.

  11. I enjoy river cruises more than ocean cruises. They are more laid back and instead of often dropping you for a day at some hokey island stop for gambling and overpriced soo.ven.ears…you wind through countryside, mountains…this looks super nice and although small your room looks comfy, clean, and good facilities. This trip of yours to China has been so enjoyable for me as a reader. Lady G in that blanket with those huge golden eyes is priceless. What a great portrait of her!

    • The whole trip has been many new experiences. I’m glad this was a river cruise, because as you said, meandering through the countryside is nice and relaxing after our whirlwind beginning.

I expected our room to be small but it turned out to be a lot bigger than I thought it might be. And a balcony. Heaven. 😀

  12. Lady Gaga indeed looks the part…I quite fancy the idea of the cruise…I guess I’ll just have to carry on reading for the time being. It must be a conspiracy. This week I’ve had no end of trouble with the internet connection, the phone…although fresh cheese hasn’t behaved either…not sure I can blame technology for that one…

  13. Jacobs Creek wines are really quite lovely but they were certainly asking a lot for them.
WP was giving me grief yesterday also so I walked away from it. I find I’m doing that a lot lately. That is, walk away from things and then come back to them later.

  14. This seems like an insanely busy tour of China. Now a cruise! I’m with Sue–I’d be exhausted.

  15. Well now that we’ve got settled in the room and have found our corkscrew we are set for the cruise!!!!! 🙂 I assume you know where the emergency exits are!

  16. It’s tough when WP doesn’t seem to want to cooperate, isn’t it? Have a sip of wine for me! 🙂

  17. The stateroom looks quite nice and a balcony to boot, you had the lap of luxury. Glad you enjoyed the cruise, I find them a bit off putting for some reason, maybe it was the company I kept on the last one. The wine, I don’t think I have ever seen wine from China I will have to hunt some up just to compare.

WP, it is giving us all fits!

    Like

    • Dynasty and The Great Wall (not sure if this second one is exact) are the common ones and not bad for the money. I thought it might be more fitting to push their own equivalents to Jacobs Creek than imported Australian. Know what I mean?

Just so you know, no-one in our party bought even one bottle. The French group drank lots of beer and of course the free wine we were offered.

  18. That’s odd about WP. I haven’t had any problems. After reading your post here, I went to my dashboard and poked around all over the place. I even started a post (which I just now deleted) to see if the problems occur while writing in the editor. Nope, no problems whatsoever. I did notice one thing on your blog that doesn’t seem to be on my blog — a java script showing snow falling on your blog. Maybe that’s what is causing the problems?

    Like

    • The snow is automatic and began on the first of the month.

I always do my posts in Word and paste into a post. When I did Friday, everything froze. I fought with it back and forth and then gave up. Nothing doing. In the morning, slow as molasses in winter. Took me 2-1/2 hours to get finished.

Thank you for poking around your dashboard to look for a solution. Thoughtful of you, Glynis.

  21. Sounds like a nice vacation. I write most of my text outside of WP and then just copy and paste when I am ready for the final review and posting.

  22. Tess, I love your “wine stories.” We always go through the same thing, constantly on the prowl for a corkscrew! Sounds like Andrew has the perfect solution. Your room looks so nice, and I can definitely see why you miss Lady Gaga – she looks like my childhood cat! ~Terri

    Like

    • Ohh. Really like a cat from your childhood. Until I got her, I’d never seen a cat with this coloring. She’s super lovable and like a two-year-old. Drops everything and comes for hugs and then is off again, happy.
I have the corkscrew from the cruise tucked into the pocket of my suitcase. 🙂 🙂 The keychain wouldn’t work for me as I leave my keys at home. I know. I don’t wear necklaces but maybe that will fix me up. Can’t do earrings; too darn heavy. 😀

  24. Ooh, sleeping on a boat! One of my favourite (and rarely enjoyed!) pleasures. It has to do with being rocked to sleep 🙂
    Your room looked very confortable!
Yay for the wine you had on hand, nothing like being prepared!

  25. Tess, what a wonder dialogue Miss the sea. I’m not a great cruise passenger, but this sounds wonderful. Once I took a cruise to Mexico and it was very rough. I spent most of the trip reviewing the bathroom facilities. Ugh. Have had some beautiful trips as well however to balance this out.

I always miss my cat. Silly probably but I do.

  26. I couldn’t get on WP last night either, and I thought it was my internet as I’ve been having problems there too. So frustrating. Glad you got your post up though, I hadn’t realised you had a cruise as part of your holiday, what fun! Your cabin looks comfy and it’s great to have a balcony. Lady Gaga would have been great company…glad she didn’t have to wait too much longer though 🙄 We always miss our cats too 😮 Glad you got to enjoy a glass or two of wine at long last. Looking forward to reading what you get up to on your cruise :p
