A Poor Man’s Meal

I’ve been locked in technical hell lately. A week ago my six-month-new Brother printer started jamming (nothing to do with music, but it was playing havoc with my nerves). No matter how many times I removed the paper, checked the paper tray, straightened and ruffle the paper, it had made up its mind to drive me crazy. I called Brother support. After scanning my bill  and e-mailing it to them to prove purchase, the lovely young lady in Montreal said she was sending me a new one.

A new one? OMG! It arrived two day’s later. Inside the box was a prepaid UPS sticker for return of the old-new one.

The same weekend, I was in my e-mail account where I receive all my blogs.  I can’t recall what I was doing but a yellow banner appeared across the top of my page with this warning:

We’ve noticed some unusual activity in your Hotmail account. To help protect you and everyone else, we’ve temporarily blocked your account. To unblock it, verify your account.”

To verify my account, they ask for a cell number so they can text back a code. I do NOT have text messaging. All communication with MSN has been one-sided (in that I cannot respond to their e-mails–you can’t reply to). I’m still NOT able to send mail from that account. I CAN open and read blogs and comment. It’s like we are not speaking the same language. I was also TOLD they cannot discuss with me what kind of  ‘activity’ they are talking about. I didn’t even ask. Might anyone have had a similar experience?

You’ve been getting my comments when I’ve had time to read your blogs but I haven’t responded  to any e-mail. I am not ignoring anyone. My apologies?

I’ve had a few requests for the following after an earlier post. Why I like this recipe is you don’t use mayo.  This is no longer a poor man’s or woman’s meal. The price of canned tuna is climbing as the size of the can is getting smaller. Does 170 grams sound about right where you live? When you drain the water, it’s supposed to be 120 grams of fish or so the can suggests.

Tuna Salad

1can (15 ounces) white navy or cannellini beans, rinsed and drained

1 can (9 ounces) water-packed canned tuna, drained and flaked

1 clove garlic, minced (more if you like)

3 ribs sliced and chopped (1/4” each) celery

2 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons lemon juice + zest of  ½ lemon

Salt and black pepper

Drain and rinse beans. Drain tuna. Toss into a large bowl. Add garlic, celery, garlic, lemon and zest. Add salt and pepper. Toss well. Add oil just so it’s not dry. Toss. Yum.

Adding crusty bread makes this a  nice light lunch. Also, you can toss some of this mixture onto a green salad (a quarter cup or so, up to you).

Originally this recipe called for thinly sliced celery (one or two ribs) but I like crunchy so I dice and lots (up to six stalks). They add bulk so there’s more salad.

Also, I sometimes add chopped sundried tomatoes (in oil) and skip the OVOO, as much as you like). Play with it and I hope you enjoy.

This is better fresh but yes you can store in the fridge overnight. It’s best at room temperature, however.

Author: Let's CUT the Crap!

I'm getting a little LONG in the tooth and have things to say about---ouch---AGEing. I believe it's certainly a state of mind but sometimes it's nice to hear that you're NORMAL. I enjoy reading by the truckload. I'm a grandma but I don't feel OLD although I'm not so young anymore. My plan is to stick it out as long as I can on this lovely planet and only will leave it kicking and screaming!

  1. To verify my account, they ask for a cell number so they can text back a code. I do NOT have text messaging…… I hope you didn’t send it – sounds like a phishing expedition to me. Hope you got things worked out. I’m following all my blogs on Google Reader now and I love it – no more clogged inbox!!!!

    • Hi Angie:
I’m still not able to SEND out responses to e-mail. I respond at Comments section in my blog. Even my WordPress reader is non-existant (=empty). Tiresome, I know. I’ve setup a gmail account but have some arrangements in place for a guest blog coming in beginning in August I don’t want to mess up. As well, I’m chicken, yes, I said chicken, to change e-mail address since am not sure what that will mess up further for me.

Nice to hear from you. IF I can make time, I’ll try checking out Google Reader but it takes me forever to fit in something new to do.

  2. You’ve got to be careful with that hotmail – or any mail or is it male. I do tend to get confused sometimes. Enjoy always, T

  3. The salad looks delicious…maybe younshould change account providers or open up a new accout. I always worry that it’s a scam when they ask for new info…they should be able to verify you without that…especially as a lot of text messages cost money to even receive them…let us know how you make out.

  7. Dear Tess, what a nightmare! I just had to replace the hard drive on my computer, but it had to be done and was worth it. I am so poorly versed in technology that I am lost without the help of my kids. And in spite of all that, you still left us with a wonderful looking recipe. I live with three vegetarians, and eat mostly that way myself, but sometimes I crave protein, and then I make tuna salad. Can’t wait to try yours out! It’s really different from any kind I’ve ever had.

  8. Love the salad.

Now to your e-mail account. Yes I had that problem several times. My solution was ultimately to drop HotMail and MSN altogether. Google and GMail, it is free, secure and works.

  10. Tess, there’ve been quite a few computer problems lately, but I haven’t heard of anyone mentioning hotmail (but I don’t use it so they may have done! Try Gmail if you still have problems… it’s been OK with me SO FAR! 😉 )
That salad looks really nice… although I may change the celery for green peppers… 😀

  11. Hi Tess, I sure hope the techno gremlins have left your space by now. Not fun!
I have had an interesting experience twice now with Aol. I have used them for all of my computer years going on 17 or 18. The other day I was prompted out of nowhere on my sign in page to create a new password. I did not. It happened twice. Each time I exited out of the page, clicked back on and logged in like normal. I have written to AOL but they are apparently illiterate. It’s taken me 3 times so far to try to explain my issue.

    I wonder what is up.

So to maybe brighten your day I offer you this award for The Very Inspiring Blogger Award. Tess zi am endlessy inspired by you and your posts and felt that this award is just fitting for how I feel about your blog. Enjoy and do with it what you want. I have no expectations other than I can express to you how I feel.

  13. I am anti-celery, but this recipe is just as yum with cukes. As to Tom’s suggestion, I left hotmail (for the most part…I never check it any more) after about 15 years and went to Gmail. In the last four years…not a single problem. I have some email from the early days of the account (dating back to 2008) which are held faithfully in memory. Would not go back to Live for love nor money.

Glad to hear the printer is back in business. ❤

  16. I am not a fan of Brother products. At my old job, we had Brother scanners and a fax machine and they worked like crap at times. Good luck with the new one, and I hope your e-mail problems get fixed. I agree with those who said that Gmail is a better e-mail service.

  19. Just ask someone you know if you can get a text sent to them for the code. I had the same problem once with gmail and that’s what I did. They claim the phone number is not kept, it’s to verrify that it’s you and not someone who is possibly trying to access your hotmail account. Hotmail is the easiest to hack, I am told and have read this too. If you do get back in, change your password right away and your security question. Also, I heard that hotmail is going to be replaced by a new e-mail address, can’t remember the name but I just heard
about it within the last week. That could be the problem as well.

You can always check in “Notifications” to see if people have answered your comments at WordPress. Another alternative if you can’t sort things out with your hotmail account.

    • Thank YOU, Genie for taking the time to explain this is depth. I am seriously thinking of changing my e-mail address for my blog but am not certain if changing it will upset the followers I have subscribed in any way. Might you know?

      • No, it won’t affect your readership or your blog. I have done so myself in the past. Just make sure to add your “profile photo or image” to your new e-mail address. If you need help with this just ask me and I will walk you through it.
